Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee says it is possible to stamp out Polio by the end of 2012 if the governments of just a few more countries beef up their efforts as demonstrated by Nigeria and India.

New cases of polio reported this year (334) are down 46% from the same time last year.

One third (111) of all Polio cases reported have occurred in endemic countries and two thirds (223) in non-endemic.

Over one half (175) of all cases have come from just two countries: Chad and the the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
