On March 11, 2011, Japan was struck by the most powerful earthquake to hit the island nation in recorded history. The 8.9-magnitude temblor, which was centered near the east coast of Japan, killed hundreds of people, caused a tsunami that unleashed 30-foot walls of water that swept across rice fields, engulfed entire towns, dragged houses onto highways, and tossed cars and boats like toys. Some waves reached six miles (10 kilometers) inland in Miyagi Prefecture on Japan's east coast.

Along with other clubs around the world, Killeen Heights contributed $5,000 to the recovery effort. We put no strings on the use of the money, just that it be used where local Rotarians thought it would make the most impact.

This week, we received an after action report from Rotary District 2660 telling us our money was used to rehabilitate Yamoto Junior High School in Miyagi Prefecture that was submerged under about 6 feet of water for a while. The building wasn't destroyed, but the equipment and furnishing in it were. The before and after pictures say more than words could ever say.
