Home - A Feeling and A Place

For the past several weeks, we have celebrated the homecoming of men and women in uniform as they return to Central Texas. While we celebrate their arrival, we also bid farewell to others who will travel in harm's way. Home is where the heart is.

But the heart of central Texans goes beyond flag waving and banner and signs. Home is not only a feeling or a concept it's also 'place.' Whether it's a two-story brick Colonial or a tent hastily set up to house a displaced family. As Rotarians, we welcome the diversity the world has to offer but recognize adversity as well. On any given day, more than 12 million people worldwide lack adequate shelter.

Our mission to provide resources for improving the quality of life here and abroad is a true message of 'home' and hope.  Locally, Habitat For Humanity is an excellent example of assisting others with finding a 'home'. 

Globally, Rotarians, through the ShelterBox program, meet the emergency needs of thousands each year who have lost their 'homes' due to disasters. While the traditional focus is on immediate needs, the need for shelter goes on.for months. I encourage you to investigate Rotary's ShelterBox program at www.shelterboxusa.org.

Containers contain a tent, stove, water purification kit, blankets and tools..necessities that provide a 'home' for those desperately in need. Through your efforts, you provide shelter for people, not countries. Providing the safety and comfort of home to many fulfills one of mankind's basic requirements. Food, shelter and clothing.
