Literacy Speaks Volumes

The traditional definition of literacy is considered to be the ability to read and write or the ability to use language to read, write, listen and speak. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) estimates that 80 percent of the world's population is literate. As you can imagine, literacy rates vary widely by country and is a crucial measure of a region's 'human capital.' Literate people can be trained less expensively and generally have a higher socio-economic status and enjoy better health. As a Rotarian, you should be proud of the relationship you've developed with our Literacy Libraries and the grant money you've donated towards helping young citizens across the globe achieve independence through educational programs. We are a community willing to say thanks to our soldiers and we should take an equal amount of pride in thanking our teachers.
