During the month of November, Rotary International will focus attention on the next generation of Rotarians…those (hopefully) coming behind us to carry on the incredible work of Rotary. This new generation, Generation Y as it's being called, has some distinct traits that we might not be aware of or understand and yet, failure to grasp the essence of this new generation could cost us in seeing Rotary continue as a viable force.

If you've never heard Michael McQueen speak or read any of his research on this new Generation Y, you've missed a treat. This young Rotarian from Australia is a recognized expert on the new generation, and he finds GREAT hope for the future in what he sees. He's noted that these "Y'ers" have three key traits as a group…they're truly aware of global issues; they are socially engaged; and finally, they are ambitious and looking for opportunities to improve and get ahead. Sound familiar??? It's the foundation of what we, as Rotarians, believe in: world peace and understanding, service and business as a way to accomplish the first two.

What we need to do is now figure out how to harness the energy and commitment of the younger generation, not by stressing the time and energy they need to invest in the traditions of Rotary, but in the service of Rotary's goals and aspirations. Once these young people understand that we older Rotarians are committed to the same sense of universal good and international understanding that they are, that we have a commitment to service both here and abroad…we can count on them as the newest recruits in the long line of Rotarians who have committed their lives (and still are) into making the world a better place!!!

In the Spirit of Rotary,

Dave
