Rotary Mourns Dave Shrewsbury

David Alan Shrewsbury, Major, U.S. Army, Retired, 56, of Harker Heights, Texas, formerly of Beckley, died April 17, 2007, at his home.

Born Oct. 24, 1950, at Logan, he was the son of Anna Lee Gadd of Flatwoods, Ky., and the late Benton Davis Shrewsbury. He was the stepson of Sarah Shrewsbury of Ringold, Va.

David was raised in Beckley, where he was a member of the First Baptist Church and a 1968 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School.

He received an appointment to the United State Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1968 and graduated in 1972. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in Armor. He graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne and Ranger School in 1972; Armor Officer Basic Course, Ft. Knox, Ky., 1973; Infantry Officer Advance Course, Fort Benning, Ga., 1979; and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., in 1984. While serving as a deputy Professor of Military Science at West Virginia University, he earned a Master of Public Administration degree in 1986.

David's military honors and awards include the Army Meritorious Service medal (three oak leaf clusters); Army Achievement medal (two oak leaf clusters); National Defense medal and the Army Service medal; parachutist badge and the Ranger Tab. He also was inducted into the Order of Saint George for excellence in armor. In 1992, he retired from the Army and entered into a career in defense contracting.

His professional affiliations include Past President and member Board of Directors of the Heart of Texas West Point Society (HOTWPS); Rotary International and the Killeen-Heights Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow; and the American Legion Post #573. ?p> Surviving: his wife, the former Nora Ann Wesson, whom he married on Aug. 30, 1975, at Fort Hood, Texas; a son, Benton Wesson Shrewsbury, Capt., USAF, Baghdad, Iraq; brother, Robert L. Shrewsbury of Harker Heights, Texas; sisters, Elizabeth Pollastrini of Winfield, Mary Walker of Waynesburg, Pa., and Joann Bragg of Fayetteville; and by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service were held April 23 at the Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, Killeen, Texas, followed by burial, with full military honors, at the Central Texas State Veteran's Cemetery in Killeen.
