You may recall that our club applied for a Major Matching Grant through The Rotary Foundation in partnership with Matamoros Industrial Rotary Club and District 4130 in Mexico for the purpose of purchasing hearing aids for persons with hearing disabilities in the Mexican Rotary District. Based on our donations to the Foundation, our district approved and provided $17,162.00 for the endeavor.

After contributions from District 4130 and The Rotary Foundation, approximately $50,000.00 was allocated toward the hearing aid project.

I was just recently briefed by Chacho Hernandez of the Matamoros Industrial club on the progress of our hearing aid project. He anticipates that by the end of this week, over 1,200 people will hear sounds they either have never heard before, or have long since forgotten with the loss of their hearing.

When Chaco visited with us last year, he related his experiences of witnessing children hearing their first sounds and the excitement on their faces. He also helped us to imagine the thrill of a grandparent being able to hear a grandchild speak or sing when they had only before been able to read lips. Those life-changing moments are happening this week because of us - because of you!

By helping to restore the sense of hearing, our club is having a real and lasting impact on the health, education, peace, and community of our partner district in Mexico. Without our help, these folks would never experience the joy they have this week in hearing these new and unfamiliar sounds. With the ability to hear also comes the ability to speak - enabling the new listener the ability to communicate without limitation with family, friends, and, well, anyone.

Chacho informed me that he is taking as many photos and video as possible so that we can share in thrill he is having as I write this message. I am looking forward to sharing the images with you.

The next time you write a check to The Rotary Foundation, or agree to be billed by the club during a matching drive, please think of this particular experience as an example of the great things that can and do happen with your money. While we may never get to meet any of the direct beneficiaries of our gifts, we certainly reap the rewards of knowing that we are improving the quality of lives somewhere in the world.

Once again, thank you for all of your support to our club and The Rotary Foundation!

Have a fruitful week.

Yours in Rotary,

Steve Walden
