October is Vocational Service month for Rotarians worldwide. Vocational Service, while sometimes being relegated to a backseat in our approach to service, is actually the very foundation of Rotary. Paul Harris and his friends met to

improve their businesses and industry in general!!! What they sought to do was:
  • aspire to high ethical standards in their occupation,

  • recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations, and

  • contribute their vocational talents to the problems and needs of society.
What incredible goals; goals whose strength and power continues to grow as we in Rotary continue to grow in influence throughout the world!! But, that influence will only continue to flourish if we continue to live-up to our motto "Service above Self" and practice that service within our businesses.

How do we practice that in the workplace???? We have the perfect guide: our Four-Way Test! Developed specifically to enhance business (vocational) ethics, The Four-Way Test is our pattern, if you will, from which our business ethics are cut! If we follow the test every day and hold it up to every decision we make, vocational service will continue to be a hallmark of Rotary!!!

In the Spirit of Rotary,

Dave
