Why should we focus on children?

A few weeks ago, I stood in front of you at our club assembly and announced
that our purpose for the year was once again, children. I have since received
many questions about what exactly does that mean - why should we focus on
children. At this point I could launch into a 'Rotary Answer,' but instead I
am going to give you my perspective.
Childhood should be the ultimate memory. The adventures in playing and the
excitement of limitless potential. There are children that are robbed of this
joy due to poverty, abuse, disease, poor education and war. These can occur
in the U.S. as well as in developing countries. Our future will be shaped by
the experiences of these kids, good or bad!

Impacting the lives of kids-ie, making things at least a little better starts with even the smallest of effort. Whether it is reading to a class, speaking to a Girl Scout group on careers, going on a medical mission to Ghana, or simply visiting a child in a cancer treatment center, the effect is tremendous. By giving of our time and ourselves, we model what it is like to care beyond ourselves! And what a great lesson for would be leaders! What a great blessing for us!!!
This year, I want to encourage you to capitalize on the opportunities offered through Rotary to reach kids. But the efforts you make do not have to be organized or meticulously planned-just be there. If you are looking for a place to start-consider going to read at nearby school or day care center.
