This past weekend, I ran a race in Anaheim, California. Near the end of the race I was passed by a man wearing a Minnie Mouse dress, mouse ears, and a sports bra. I later learned he is a Rotarian and banker from a Los Angeles club raising fund for leukemia and lymphoma.

Earlier this summer, I met a Rotarian in Helen, Georgia who was retired but stayed active by driving a bus full of vacationers to a tubing stream in the mountains. I had a great conversation with him about our club and his ideas for community service.

From my travels, I am realizing that I can run into a Rotarian almost anywhere-in almost any circumstance. What a great benefit we have to be able to find that common thread with strangers. I think this instant bond with other professionals and business men and women is what Paul Harris had in mind many years ago when he and others created our special organization.

So, when you travel, make sure you wear a pin, hat, Crawfish Boil shirt, or other logo'd apparel. You will surely find a Rotarian and you will be enriched by your conversations.

Have a fruitful week.

Yours in Rotary,

Steve Walden
